Kearsney College 2 Westville 1
This was a game of two halves which was dominated by hosts, Kearsney College, in the first half. Striker, Trystan Tanner, made the most of his opportunities by scoring a brace, to leave Kearsney 2-0 up at half-time. After the break, Westville came out fired up and attacked from the start, putting Kearsney on the back foot. Westville scored midway through the half and continued to put pressure on the Kearsney defenders and goalkeeper. Kearsney held on as Westville took long range shots and attacked, looking for the equaliser. This exciting game finally ended in a 2-1 win to Kearsney, who has had an excellent season, only losing one fixture 2-1 to DHS.
RUGBY SEVENS
Kearsney College won the weekend’s Voortrekker High Sevens tournament in Pietermaritzburg, after beating Maritzburg College 31-17 in the final. Kearsney had convincing wins in all three pool games against Port Natal (won 26-0), DHS (won 33-5) and Voortrekker (won 50-0). They only conceded one try in the pool matches, which was against DHS. Kearsney then advanced through to the Cup semi-finals where they beat Hilton 33-5, before advancing to the final against Maritzburg College. The winning team’s stand-out players were Tristan Tedder, Josh van Vuuren and Ryan Lewarne. Kearsney’s star player, Tristan Dixon, was unavailable to the team for this weekend’s game, as he played in the KZN 7s side at the competition. Kearsney has a young side, comprised mostly of Grade 10s and 11s, and has had a great sevens season, winning two of the three tournaments played (Crawford and Voortrekker) and only losing one game during the season which was to Michaelhouse.
