Bass biting at Albert Falls

Bass biting at Albert Falls

We have been told of good bass fishing at Albert Falls over the past week.

Bass

Albert Falls bass are feeding well at the moment and although the water level has dropped below 50%, there are still decent catches occurring throughout the day. The windy conditions for these areas seem to produce a lot of bites if the angler is willing to stick it out and keep on fishing through the bumpy waters. The deeper waters have produced a lot of fish in the windy conditions, particularly on the drop-offs using heavily weighted Spinnerbaits. In the shallower waters, generally the wind creates a predominant colour line, which is the muddy waters converging with the cleaner waters from the deeper drop-offs. This is a prime spot for bass to congregate and hunt small baitfish. A Spinnerbait, Jerkbait or Crankbait will work particularly well in these areas, with a weightless Fluke being one of the preferred approaches during midday.  Inanda Dam has slowed down substantially and has been extremely cold over the past week. As the weather cleared and the surface temperature began to raise, the fish came back onto the bite and anglers all over the dam started to have great success.  When the bai fish started to show in the shallows, the Spinnerbaits started to work extremely well. The local dams that are fortunate enough to still have some form of decent water level, like Inanda and Shongweni, have been far better than the lower levelled dams such as Albert Falls, Hazelmere and Goedetrou.

Anglers using conventional tackle at Inanda, Albert Falls, Midmar and Shongweni have all had fair success towards the end of the week. The water did take a bit of a temperature fluctuation which set the fish into lock-jaw mode for a while. Luckily those who spent time at the dam for the whole week managed to squeeze some last minute fish in to end their holidays on a good note. Many of the fish landed on the conventional tackle made 5kg or more, with the average fish coming in at around 3kg. Inanda Dam did particularly well with specimen anglers over the course of last week, with a fish of 18kg being seen from the campsite. In the deeper waters up at the top of the dam, the specimen anglers also did extremely well, one angler who managed to land three fish over 15kg claims that the fish went into a feeding frenzy and he managed to land all three fish over 15kg in under two hours. Around a dozen fish between 5kg and 10kg were also caught by the other angler in on the site fishing with smaller baits.
