Ballito and Transkei spot Grey Sharks

Ballito and Transkei spot Grey Sharks

Wind, wind and more wind is what anglers had to compete with over the last week, but against the odds, many anglers still had a great time landing some very nice fish.

Ski boaters had a tough time finding a gap to launch, but grabbed every opportunity with both hands.

Ballito anglers hooked into Browns, Grey Sharks and a few smaller Diamonds. There have been a handful of Eagle Rays as well. Small Shad have been frequenting the area and make excellent bait for most inedibles (please make sure these are size).

La Mercy anglers are still getting a few non-edible fish such as Browns and Sandies in the evenings, but the strong North East winds have also made fishing difficult for most anglers. The water has been dirty and rough, but the strong Westerly winds should flatten the sea and clear the water. Weather for the weekend is looking to be an absolute cracker and will allow for much more comfortable conditions.

Umhloti took a bit of a pounding from the winds and not many fish were caught. Some small edibles for the guys scratching with light tackle were all that were on offer.

Umhlanga has been very quiet over the last week and weekend with only a couple of Grey Sharks being landed on Mackerel baits.

Blue Lagoon North bank has also been a bit quiet except for a very nice Grunter of about 4kgs on Sea Lice. The beach area has also been a bit quiet with only a few Shad. With the big Westerly that has blown, try spinning for Snoek from this area as the west will assist with a long cast into the deep. Snoek have been known to go into feeding frenzies during the west so don't be scared to give it a try.

Durban Piers are still producing lots of small Shad and due to the water temperature dropping, much more bait fish such as Red eye and Maas bunker. The odd Brown Skate has been landed and plenty of small fish at night. Durban beach front has seen lots of Blue bottles due to the winds that have been blowing, and all but the brave have stayed away from this area. Smaller edibles such as Grunter, Sole, Snapper Salmon and Flat head have been landed on small Chokka baits.

The Bluff is still producing Kingfish, but only on live baits. Live Karanteen is the best bait by far, but are few and far between as well. With the water being rough, the Kingfish have moved a bit deeper, but will come back into the shallows with the Westerly. Remember, heavy tackle and thick line for these dirty fighters, Triple Fish Fluorocarbon leader up to 1,2mm is totally necessary.

Toti has been quiet except for small Shad and the odd Skate on the low tide.

Transkei has seen no sign of the Sardines yet, but hopefully some cooler water will get them moving up the coast. Most points are still producing Grey Sharks and Hammer Head Sharks. Most estuaries have seen some very nice Kob coming out, as well as a few Garrick.
