Attack hurt SA hopes - Mitchell

John Mitchell believes a lack of attacking options had hurt South African franchises during the 2015 Vodacom SupeRugby season.

DHL Stormers was the only SA side to make the play-offs and once there was soundly beaten in Cape Town by the Brumbies.

Mitchell, former All Blacks head coach, believes SA franchises are relying too much on their traditional brawn when attacking.

"Our style of football here in South Africa does not have enough attacking threats to be constantly dangerous to the opposition. New Zealand and Australian sides have the ability to let the ball beat the man and go to space. I think we are over-working the way we tend to play rugby here with our reliance on having to dominate the advantage line before the ball goes to space," Mitchell said.

He also feels that the Stormers were tactically lacking in their loss to the Brumbies.

"You know at finals time it is all about subtle tactics. It was amazing how the Brumbies isolated the smaller Stormers backs and then cleaned out past the ball," Mitchell added.

Mitchell further made it clear that he is happy working in business and for Supersport as an analyst right now and that he is not keen on the head coach vacancy at the Cell C Sharks.

"It has to be right for me and the Sharks are not right for me right now," Mitchell concluded.
