Anderson up to eight
Updated | By ECR Sportswave
Kevin Anderson reached his career highest world tennis ranking on Monday.
The 2.03m tall South African said he was “thrilled” to be 8th on the ATP world rankings this week.
Anderson’s parents, Mike and Barbara of Sandton, Johannesburg had just finished framing a poster of their son after he had reached the 9th spot after winning the New York Open last week. Over the weekend, Anderson messaged his parents after seeing what they had framed and said “you can update the wall poster on Monday again to me at number 8!”
“It was an incredible feeling to reach a career-high ranking of number 9 and now I am top 8 … WOW!” tweeted Anderson.
Anderson is a mere 455 points behind 7th ranked, David Goffin of Belgium and with very few points to defend in the coming weeks the South African could well find his ranking could improve come the summer season. However, Anderson will be mindful that “breathing down his neck” is 9th ranked Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina) and 10th ranked Jack Stock (USA).
This week Anderson is playing in the ATP Acapulco event in Mexico where seeded five, Anderson enjoyed a comfortable first round win over Radu Albot of Moldovia 6-3 6-4 late Monday night.
