The announcement was eventually made this morning after Newcastle released Pardew from his contract on Tyneside, where he had spent more than four years in charge.

Pardew returns to a club he served for four years as a player and where he is remembered for scoring the winner in the 1990 FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

The former Palace player replaces Neil Warnock, who was sacked last week.

He leaves Newcastle with the Tyneside club sitting 10th in the Premier League.

Pardew will be in charge for The Eagles FA Cup encounter with Dover Athletic tomorrow.

Play at Dover kick off at 3pm south african time.
