June is the month that the race usually takes place in and in 2023 Sunday, 11 June has been confirmed as the race date so runners can begin their preparation.

Despite this year's race being a down run finishing in Durban, the 2023 race will following the same route according to the race organisers.

"The 96th running of the world’s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon will take place on Sunday, 11 June 2023," Race Director Rowayn James said in a statement.

“Next year’s Comrades Marathon will be the 48th Down Run, starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing 12 hours later in Durban.

"Details of the entry process, qualifying criteria and other race information will be confirmed at the official media launch, the date of which will be announced in due course."

The race will move back to a more traditional slot in the middle of the year after this year's race was pushed out to the end of August to make sure they weren't going to be curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tete Djinana won the 2022 men's race while it was Russian athlete running in the international colours Alexandra Morozova who won the women's title after a dramatic late inclusion in the race.
