Zweli Mkhize: SA is not experiencing second wave of COVID-19
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
South Africa isn't experiencing a second wave of Covid-19 infections. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has warned though, it all depends on how we manage the situation.
35 more people have died, after contracting the virus, taking the country's death toll to 20 241.
Mkhize held a technical briefing last night.
He said they've picked up more than 1 800 new cases, bringing the number of infections identified since the outbreak in March, to over 751 000. He says the Eastern and Western Capes will be monitored as there's been a spike in cases there:
"It's not the same as what we are seeing in the Free States and Northern Cape because there, they got onto the same first wave.

We started seeing a few increasing activities in the Eastern Cape and a little bit in the Western Cape. We can't yet say this is a new surge, we are basically saying we are now observing these areas."
Mkhize says compared to other countries, South Africa is doing well:
"In July, South Africa was recorded as number 5 in the world in terms of the highest numbers of positive cases but South Africa has been pushed down."
"Three weeks ago, South Africa was around number 10. It has now been overtaken by Spain, UK,Argentina, Colombia and Italy and now we are at number 15," he said.
