The massive leak of financial information from law firm Mossack Fonseca claims to show how the world's rich and famous hide their wealth offshore.

The world's biggest leak of financial information in history claims to reveal the hidden off-shore dealings in assets of around 140 political figures.

The leak made up of 11.5-million tax documents was reportedly obtained from an anonymous source by a German daily newspaper.

The documents from around 214 000 offshore entities covering almost 40 years came from a Panama-based law firm with offices in more than 35 countries.

The documents linked to Khulubuse Zuma include information around two companies that acquired oil-fields in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Other prominent figures mentioned in the leak include an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, football player Lionel Messi and Ukraine President, Petro Pororshenko among others.

The leaked financial data claims that 12 world leaders are apparently hiding their wealth in off-shore accounts.

Gerard Ryle from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists which obtained the papers says it is not necessarily illegal to have an off-shore account.

"It's not necessary illegal to have an offshore account but it is probably arguably wrong not to declare it. In some cases at least, these leaders fail to declare they have the interest off-shore," he said.
