A few hundred marchers gathered at the Green Market Square dressed in black and branded with stickers with the slogan Zuma Must Fall.

The march culminated at the grand parade where marchers were met with a large police contingent.

This is what those taking part said ahead of this evening's State of the Nation Address.

"I want a new president," said one marcher.

"That's exactly what I want as well. I'm German. If I compare him to Angela Merkel - she lives in a little townhouse and has a normal salary like all Western European leaders,"  said another.

"It feels like we're standing up for our rights and that's about it," said one participant.

"We need somebody stronger to take his place like Cyril," a Cape Town resident said.

Supporters of the campaign say President Zuma has run the country to the ground and they won't stand for it any longer.

Organiser, Christelle Scheepers had this message for President Zuma.

"We offer you an olive branch, sir - an opportunity to redeem yourself. Design with dignity, if not, we will view this as you crossing the Rubicon. We will pursue you until you and your supporters cave in," she said.

Earlier, South Africans were urged to rally ahead of tonight's State of the Nation Address.

Participants have been discouraged from wearing any political party regalia.

Tonight, the President is expected to address the plight of the economy, the recent Cabinet reshuffle of Finance Ministers and the drought that has gripped parts of the country.

The City of Cape Town granted 5 000 attendees permission to participate in the "Zuma Must Fall" movement.
