Zuma using the race card as distraction: DA

The DA in KZN has rejected President Jacob Zuma's suggestion that Friday's marches calling for him to step down were racially motivated.

The DA joined civil society groups on a march along the Durban beachfront, calling for Zuma to resign, with similar demonstrations were staged across the country.

Speaking at a ceremony yesterday marking Chris Hani's 24-year death anniversary, the president said the protest action displayed a belief he thought had died in 1994.

Zuma claims many posters depicted black people as baboons.

The DA's provincial chairperson, Haniff Hoosen says these statements serve as a distraction to the issue at hand.

"The response from the president at Chris Hani's memorial is shocking but not unsurprising. He's attempted to rubbish the national administration as mere racial mobilisation. This incident reminds us how far the ANC has come from the days of Nelson Mandela," he said.

In a statement, Save SA has says Zuma referred to racism as the motivation for the marches out of desperation.

Meanwhile, another national shutdown is set to take place tomorrow.

In a joint statement, a group of opposition parties called on South Africans to show their support for tomorrow's National Day of Action which coincides with the President's 75th birthday.
