Zuma tackles racism, unemployment in Human Rights Day address
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka, Chanelle Lutchman
Racism, unemployment and local governance. These are some of the issues South Africans want to see addressed by government.
Many people attended Human Rights Day celebrations at Moses Mabhida Stadium yesterday.
President Jacob Zuma said there are two ways for reconciliation to happen.
"We must work harder to eliminate the view that reconciliation is a one-way process where the black majority extends a hand of friendship but with little reciprocation from their white compatriots," he said.
While some people who attended yesterday's official event have told Newswatch human rights are also about acknowledging the rights of those around you.
"We have different people from different socio-economic backgrounds and different environments. For me, it isn't about my right as a human but to actually acknowledge the person next to you," one attendee said.
"I'm glad the president has addressed the issue of local government - how it's going to be conducted,"another said.
"Things education, health care, service providing, clean good governance are important," a Durban resident said.
