Zuma spy tapes: Reactions

The IFP says it hopes that President Jacob Zuma does not appeal yesterday's High Court decision on his dropped corruption charges - even though it is his right to pursue the matter further in higher court.

The North Gauteng High Court ruled that former acting NPA boss Mokotedi Mpshe's decision in 2009 to stop Zuma's prosecution was irrational. The DA had approached the courts seeking the decision to drop the near 800 charges reviewed.

The IFP's Narend Singh says the ANC needs to ask itself some honest questions.

"We just hope the ruling party will take an honourable decision after asking themselves whether the captain of the ship is the right captain or are they going to go through rocky periods moving forward," he said.

Meanwhile political analyst Protas Madlala believes the court decision could have a negative impact on the ANC in the upcoming local government elections.

"I think the court's decision is damning news for the ruling party which wants to retain its municipalities. On the other hand it is very good news for the opposition parties who will be running to the bank to campaign for more voters," he said.
