Zuma prayer event in Durban off to slow start

There's been a lengthy delay to a planned mass prayer event for former president Jacob Zuma in Durban.

It had been scheduled for 10am on Thursday at an open field facility in the vicinity of the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Those who have heeded the call to be part of the event have started arriving.

Some arrived in their private vehicles, while it would seem those who'd made arrangements ahead of time were dropped by buses which made a final stop just across the road at the famous Kings Park Swimming Pool.

They were singing and clapping and entering the venue ever so slowly- to emphasize their arrival.

Some are carrying banners written ‘Welcome Home President Jacob Zuma’ while others wore t-shirts with the usual ‘Hands off Zuma’ and other related slogans.

As people entered the soft gravel road towards the open field, often used by local football teams for practice, men in military uniform, presumably loyal members of the now-disbanded MK Vets, start vetting out who to let closer to the stage.

It's not clear how many people are expected to heed the invitation by the Jacob Zuma Foundation to come, but among those who've arrived are suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magushule and Carl Niehaus, among others.

The prayer event is to officially welcome Zuma after serving a third of his 15 month prison sentence.
