Zuma not eligible to stand as MP: ConCourt
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
On Monday, the Constitutional Court ruled that former president Jacob Zuma was not eligible to stand for election to the National Assembly.

Justice Leona Theron handed down the ruling on Monday morning.
"It is declared that Mr Zuma was convicted of an offence and sentenced to more than 12 months imprisonment for purposes of section 47 (1) e of the Constitution and is not eligible to be a member of and not qualified to stand for election to the National Assembly until five years (has passed).”

The judgment overturned an earlier ruling by the Electoral Court, which found Zuma eligible despite his sentence for contempt of court.
The apex court found that President Cyril Ramaphosa's remission of sentence is irrelevant, as it has no impact on the length of the sentence imposed on the MK party leader.
