This comes after he was barred from entering the country on Thursday evening.

Maimane wanted to attend the treason trial of the country's incarcerated opposition leader, Hakainde Hichilema, but was prevented from disembarking his plane.

A furious Maimane addressed media outside the Zambian High Commission.

"We must stand together when dictators rise up. I'm asking the South African government to request and strongly send a letter to the Zambian authorities to explain to us why I was denied entry to Zambia," says Maimane.

Maimane is demanding that President Zuma take a stand for democracy in Africa.

"We are here to make one simple demand - that Jacob Zuma and his government here...history must decide which side do we stand on. Do we stand on the side of dictators, or do we want to stand for democracy?"
