The area has been plagued by crime, especially against women and children, with fed-up residents taking to the streets.

President Zuma urged the community to work with law enforcement agencies and government departments to defeat the scourge of crime.

The Imbizo came a few weeks after the President visited the Pieters family in their home in the area, following the tragic killing of their three-year old Courtney Pieters, who was found dead and buried in a shallow grave.

"We are here to deal with policing, courts and others that deal with related matters," he told residents.

Zuma also acknowledged that crime in South Africa has increased.

"We can't live side-by-side with crime," he said.

The president undertook to return to Elsies Rivier in the near future to check up on the progress being made in the fight against crime.
