The controversy around Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and the Guptas is likely to take centre stage at the ANC's National Executive Committee meeting this weekend.

Jonas said yesterday that the politically connected family offered him Nhlanhla Nene's position as Finance Minister but he turned it down.

The Gupta family issued a statement denying this, saying the statement from Jonas is political points scoring between rival factions within the ruling party.

The DA's Mmusi Maimane says the country has been captured.

"When I reflect on today - I realise how historic a day it is in the sense that as a nation, it has now become quite obvious that our country has been captured by President Zuma.

"In many ways, I feel sorry for South Africans that voted for the ANC. They didn't vote for the ANC, they voted for the Guptas," he said.

The EFF's Floyd Shivambu says the Guptas are running the ANC government.

"We know that the Guptas are the ones who run all affairs of the ANC government. They are the ones who make appointments of key positions in government because they have Zuma as their puppet. We have confirmed that already," he said.

Cope's Dennis Bloem says one family cannot have power to control the state.

"This is a really scary development. A week ago, we said if a family is taking control and knowing state secrets it poses a very serious danger," he said.
