Zuma decision to engage ConCourt ‘correct approach’ - Zikalala
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
KwaZulu-Natal Premier and African National Congress (ANC) provincial chair Sihle Zikalala believes former president Jacob Zuma was correct to engage the Constitutional Court.
The former head of state has applied to the apex court for a rescission of its decision to sentence him to a 15-months jail term for contempt.
The court has agreed to hear the application on July 12.
“We don’t want to see any confrontation between the people and the state and we don’t want also to have a situation that will lead to any form of violence,” Zikalala said outside Zuma’s home in Nkandla on Saturday.
“So we believe that the approach that has been taken by Nxamalala is going to help us and ensure that the matter is engaged properly in the proper platform, which is the Constitutional Court.”
Dozens of Zuma’s supporters, including some amabutho (Zulu warriors), have been gathering outside Zuma’s Nkandla homestead.
They have vowed not to allow Zuma to be arrested and taken to prison to begin serving his sentence.
Zikalala admitted the Constitutional Court ruling has divided the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
“It is clear that the society is divided, we are engaging with all stakeholders. The stakeholders that are involved here will be ANC members, traditional leaders, the third is the structures. The fact that the matter is now in the Constitutional Court, it makes us to be able to solve the matter where it should be engaged,” he said.
