Zuma could lose ANC support: Analyst

Political analyst, Imraan Buccus, says President Jacob Zuma, could start losing the support of some African National Congress members following allegations that he has been planning on relocating to Dubai.

Both the City Press and the Sunday Times reported on alleged leaked e-mails of employees of the Guptas, which the reports say prove the level of influence the Gupta family has over the president and several cabinet ministers.

One of the e-mails details a letter to the Crown Prince of The United Arab Emirates, informing him of Zuma's intention to move with his family to Dubai and asking for patronage.

The president has denied he is planning to relocate, saying the only home he will retire to is Nkandla.

Buccus says it will be interesting to see what happens among Zuma's loyal supporters in the ANC:

"I think that with many revolutionary movements, they tend to close ranks around the leader when push comes to shove. I think also within the ANC there is only so much people within the leadership can take. I think the fact that the balance of forces have changed and shifted against Zuma, is a clear indication of how frustrated the people within the ANC are. So, I think that a lot depends now on what happens in the NEC, what happens within the ranks of the ANC," he said.

Meanwhile the ANC will brief the media this afternoon on the outcomes of its National Executive Committee meeting.

Zuma reportedly survived another motion of no confidence at the weekend, this time tabled by NEC member Joel Netshitenzhe.
