Zuma case: PANSALB to take 'language prejudice' to Concourt
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Pan South African Language Board says it will approach the Constitutional Court over what it believes is language discrimination in the country's courts.
The board's been commenting after Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane was not allowed to make a 10-minute opening statement in the Pietermaritzburg High Court in isiZulu.
Sikhakhane is representing former President Jacob Zuma.
He's arguing for a permanent stay of prosecution on charges linked to the arms deal.
"We do have professional organisations that deal with multilingual translation in South Africa. There are interpreting services that are provided. How is a ten-minute opening statement going to defile court proceedings or prejudice anybody in court," the board's Rakwena Monareng said.
