Zululand community to march against mayor

Some community members in Zululand will be marching to the municipal offices on Monday to call for the district mayor to step down.

Thulasizwe Buthelezi is being accused of corruption, fraud and wasteful expenditure of municipal funds.

The leader of the march Sanele Kunene says the mayor allegedly spent more than R240 million on VIP protection for himself.

"So that's what we are marching against. It is not the first time the parliament has mismanaged finances. We have found that he has also spent on tender meetings as well as interviews, saying who is and is not appointed so it's a one man show. He is the one calling shots in the municipality."

Last year, Ulundi residents opened a fraud case against Buthelezi over claims he spent R5 million on a business breakfast in Durban ahead of the IFP's manifesto launch.

Buthelezi, who's a member of the party, rubbished the amount at the time.

Kunene says Zululand is supposed to provide them with water.

"If you go to Nongoma or Pongola it's the same story. If you go to the rural areas in those municipalities you will find that they do not have water. It's either they have insufficient water or they do not have it at all."

"The municipality has a 240 million deficit, which means in a couple of months they may not be able to pay municipal water."
