Zoos, some beaches reopening in eThekwini

eThekwini Municipality's reopening its central and southern beaches to the public.

The City says shark nets and safety gear have been serviced and installed. 


The beaches north of the uMgeni Estuary up to the oThongathi River remain closed due to contamination of the uMhlanga Estuary. 


"The public will be advised when it is safe to use beaches in the north of the City," eThekwini Municipality said. 


The municipality says the uMgeni Bird Park and Mitchell Park Zoo are going to reopen from Wednesday, as well.

It's thanked people for making generous food donations to sustain the animals at these facilities during the unrest. 


It says it won't be needing more donations as it has enough.


"The Municipality extends its gratitude to the public for generous food donations received to sustain animals at these facilities during the unrest. 

 

"These facilities will no longer be accepting donations as more than enough food for animals was received. The surplus will be shared with similar institutions.

 

The City added: "The public is reminded that the country is currently on lockdown alert level 4, therefore Covid-19 protocols such as social distancing, wearing of masks and sanitising must be adhered to at all the City's public facilities."
