Zondo commission wants no-show Zuma to be thrown in prison

The State Capture commission of inquiry has confirmed it will apply to the Constitutional Court to impose a jail term on former President Jacob Zuma.

The commission has set aside this week to deal with Zuma's testimony, however, the former head of state's lawyers, indicated on Monday that he would not be participating.

"If it allowed to prevail there will be lawlessness and chaos in the courts. There may be other people who will decide to follow his example when they are served with a summons or other court processes and decide they can ignore them,"

"The commission will make an application to the Constitutional Court and seek an order that Mr. Zuma is guilty of contempt of court and if the Court reaches that conclusion then it is its discretion what to do. One of the things it can do is to impose a term of imprisonment, another would be for it to impose a fine. The commission will approach the Constitutional Court and ask it to impose a term of imprisonment on Mr. Zuma," said Zondo

Zondo said while it is up to Zuma to demand he recuses himself, he has presided over thousands of cases in his career as a judge and has never been asked to recuse himself.

He also added that over 250 witnesses have appeared before the commission and none of them has called for his recusal.
