Zimbabwe's protest pastor reacts to political turmoil

Zimbabwe's protest pastor, Evan Mawarire, has called the latest developments in his country "unprecedented".

Mawarire took to Facebook Live earlier, calling on his fellow Zimbabweans to keep safe.

The leader of the  "This Flag" social movement says this is a situation they didn't see coming.

"As we go through a season that is unprecedented - we are watching events that we have never seen in our nation. We are also watching what is a culmination of the work that citizens have been doing," he says.

Gunshots were heard as soldiers took over key buildings including state TV and radio stations as well as courts and the parliamentary precinct. 

Soldiers were seen searching vehicles outside Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, previously Harare International. 

Military generals have insisted that President Robert Mugabe and his family are safe. They say they're only targeting criminals around the president and that they are not attempting a coup. 

President Jacob Zuma has also called for calm and restraint in Zimbabwe, amid the political crisis.

In a statement on behalf of SADC, President Zuma says he's noted with great concern the situation unfolding there.   

He's also encouraged the Zimbabwean government and army to resolve the political impasse amicably.  

Zuma says they will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain ready to assist.
