Zimbabweans head to the polls for historic vote

Zimbabweans will decide who their next president will be.  They are heading to the polls today.

But for the fist time since 1980, former President Robert Mugabe's name is not among the 23 presidential hopefuls.

Incumbent, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over after Mugabe was forced to resign in November, is hoping to stay in power.  

But opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa is confident victory will be his.  

Meanwhile, Mugabe called a press conference at his residence yesterday and told reporters he would not vote for those who tormented him and forced him out of office.

The 94-year-old says he hopes voters will reject what he has labelled the current military government and return to a constitutional democracy.

"We shall never again experience a period where the army is used to thrust one person into power, no," he said.

Mugabe says Zimbabweans are living in fear under the current government.

Meanwhile, ANC MP Hlomane Chauke and DA MP Stevens Mokgalapa have travelled to Zimbabwe to observe the election as part of a SADC electoral observer mission.
