Police minister Fikile Mbalula has confirmed that Mugabe handed herself over to the police and is set to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court.

It is alleged the Zimbabwean first lady attacked the woman at a Sandton hotel on Sunday night.

The 20-year-old is believed to have sustained injuries to her face. It's alleged she was assaulted with an extension chord.

The Department of International Relations has blatantly refused to confirm whether Mugabe is in South Africa with her diplomatic passport.

The department has reportedly said Mugabe's trip was "a private visit so government cannot get involved if an alleged crime is committed."

Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane says that the case should be pursued through the courts.

"We hope justice will be done and that it will send a strong message to all leaders who think they can abuse their power and assault innocent people in our country," she said.
