Zikalala 'studying' Public Protector’s report on Mshengu’s new car

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says he is studying a report by the Public Protector which found that the KZN Education Department's purchase of a new car for its MEC Kwazi Mshengu was unlawful.

Busisiwe Mkhwebane released the findings of her report on Monday.

A probe was launched after she received a complaint from the DA's Imraan Keeka and following a Sunday Times report.

According to the article in 2019, a forged letter claimed that the vehicle Mshengu previously used, a one-year-old Mercedes Benz GLE 350 model wasn't safe, prompting the purchase of a new one.

Mkhwebane said there was no evidence linking Mshengu to wrongdoing as they couldn't trace the origin of the letter.

She says there is no indication in the evidence that the department's HOD made any attempt to obtain a detailed mechanical report by the vehicle manufacturer in order to make an informed decision on the replacement.

Meanwhile, KZN Education spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa says Mshengu notes the report.

"Even though MEC Mshengu has suffered a great deal of public and humiliation due to these baseless allegations, he remains committed to fighting corruption and maladministration wherever and whenever it raised it's ugly head."
