Zikalala says ‘significant progress’ in battle against construction mafias

Public Works Minister Sihle Zikalala says together with law enforcement agencies, they've made significant progress in cracking down on the construction mafias.
Groups including some business forums have been going around construction sites threatening and intimidating contractors in a bid to force developers to give them a portion of the contracts.
In June, Zikalala revealed that since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the interference by these mafias has cost government about R3 billion.

The minister says they've now set up a call centre for people to report unlawful actions at development site.
"We also are appealing to construction companies not to cower into submission by complying with these criminal conducts."
Zikalala held a briefing on the on key matters within the Public Works and Infrastructure portfolio on Sunday.
