Zikalala: Govt working towards normalising all services
Updated | By Newswatch
Premier Sihhle Zikalala has thanked South Africans for their support as KwaZulu-Natal reels from the devastation of the floods.
Zikalala was speaking on Tuesday afternoon during a joint sitting of Parliament on the disaster that has so far claimed the lives of 435 people and left thousands without homes.
"As KwaZulu-Natal, we also wish to express our solidarity with our sister province, the Eastern Cape, which also suffered devastating floods, stealing precious lives, destroying homes, damaging infrastructure, disrupting services and bringing untold pain to communities."
He said work on the different phases of intervention is underway.

"The work has begun to quantify the damage caused by the floods. This is important towards the implementation of phase three outlined by the president, which is the rehabilitation and construction of the province, which should begin to work towards normalising all services.
"We pledge to ensure that what we have seen before where it takes a prolonged period to repair damaged infrastructure, which would have been damaged by storms, is not happening again and we would want to ensure that we expedite the interventions.
"We commit that in all interventions that will be done by the provincial government we will ensure that we are corrupt-free and ensure that all contracts are pre-audited."
