The local economy is taking strain due to the recent wave of violence and looting, as well as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

It’s estimated that the civil unrest cost the KwaZulu-Natal economy alone more than R20-billion and has placed more than 150 000 jobs in the province at risk.

The premier plans to draw in more businesses to invest in KZN during a two-day meeting following the recent wave of civil unrest that shook investor confidence.

The July riots left a trail of destruction, including the shutting down of key arterial routes from the ports of Durban and Richards Bay, which had a devastating impact on the provincial economy.

Provincial spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says the premier's mandate is to reassure businesses.

“The premier’s message during the two-day meeting is clear, the security situation has been stabilised and KwaZulu-Natal is ready and open for business.

“Key to the message is beyond the initial period of consolidating safety and security, raising destroyed infrastructure and returning to normality. KwaZulu-Natal is resetting the economy towards greater inclusivity and co-ownership.

“Premier Zikalala said we’ll build on a solid skills base and employment. Our view is that in post-conflict situations, employment is a major factor in achieving short-term stability, socio-economic progress and sustainable peace.”
