Youth should 'consider HIV/AIDS research'
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
A Durban-based scientist, Professor Salim Abdool Karim says South Africa has an obligation to make new discoveries to slow and eventually stop the spread of HIV and AIDS.
Abdool Karim will today receive a lifetime achievement award from the South African Medical Research Council for his contributions to health research.
While the Professor says although he is honoured, he feels he has another 20 years of research ahead of him as the work required is not even half done yet.
Karim is encouraging the youth to consider careers in the field, saying there are about 1000 new infections in South Africa everyday.
"To find solutions to the HIV epidemic is a marathon - it's a relay race, not a sprint. We have to do our bit and hand the baton to the next generation because they will be smarter and they will be undertaking research that will find the solutions that we couldn't," he said.
