Young doctor exposes sexism, racism and bullying in the workplace

Yumna Moosa, a University of Cape Town medical school graduate, recently posted a YouTube video highlighting the two years of alleged bullying, sexual harassment, racism and intimidation she says she was subjected to by senior doctors at an unnamed Kwazulu Natal hospital.

In the video, the junior doctor – who is the younger sister of well-known comedian Riaad Moosa – begins by saying: “I want to tell you why I don’t want to be a doctor anymore.” 

The eight-minute video features audio recordings of meetings Moosa had with department heads and senior hospital officials, following official reports she had made regarding the abuse. The audio clearly highlights attempts to bully her and threaten her career for speaking out against unnamed senior doctors. 

At one point Moosa questions: “When a single woman is being told that women are stupid and irrational and incompetent, is this not sexism?” The response from the hospital official is: “No.”

The video – which has since garnered more than 30000 views on YouTube since Friday, Facebook – has earned the young woman both local and international praise, with many people applauding her bravery. 

Moosa says she genuinely believes in the healing power of kindness and mutual respect, and hopes that her story can prevent others from having her experience. 

Two of the senior doctors are currently facing charges of professional misconduct.
