'Worst is still to come' as cost of living keeps rising
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
The rising cost of living is forcing many South Africans to cut out healthy food from their diets to make ends meet.
This is according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group.
It says the average household food basket in April stood at R4 542,93.
"This is a R92 increase, or a 2.1% increase on the month of March, and a R344 or an 8% increase on the past year," says the organisation's Mervyn Abrahams.

"That is really a very big increase which is causing massive financial stresses for particularity middle-class and low-income households."
The war in Ukraine has pushed up the price of five litre of cooking oil to R229, among other crippling hikes.
And Abrahams says he fears the worst is still to come.
