Worries grow as Maritzburg township still without proper water, toilets
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The IFP has called on the KwaZulu-Natal government to speed up efforts to install proper sanitation systems in Pietermaritzburg's Denmark township.

The party's Thokozile Gumede says conditions there are appalling. Residents are still using pit toilets.
Gumede says they're worried about the health risks.
"Imagine the people who stay there everyday - smelling these things and children playing across sewerage flowing all over. What standards are we setting for our people," Gumede said.

Mbulelo Baloyi, who's with Human Settlements, says they are aware of the problem in the Denmark settlement and there are plans to improve the situation.
"Together with the Msunduzi Municipality, a programme was packaged to upgrade the area because it is one of those areas from within the informal settlement upgrade," Baloyi said.
