The warning comes as a 46-year-old man is due to appear in court on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend in Port Dunford in northern KZN.
The man had apparently reported her missing last month.
The woman's burned remains where found by security guards in a nearby forest.
Department spokesperson, Ncumisa Fandesi says the man had apparently been beating her.
''Her neighbours are reporting that she was constantly being beaten up and nobody took the trouble to report the abuse to the police.
''Our MEC is calling on women who are in abusive relationships to use this case as an example of what happens to a woman who chooses to stay in an abusive relationship. Abuse doesn't stop until the person being abused decides to put a stop to it,'' she said.
