"Just have the courage to walk away because it never ends well," the department's Ncumisa Ndelu said.

The department has been speaking after the spotlight was thrown on domestic abuse and violence this week when a video of Babes Wodumo being physically assaulted went viral.

The singer, who's real name is Bongekile Simelane, is seen being repeatedly slapped by a man in a clip on her live Instagram feed.

Her father says she's opened an assault charge against her boyfriend, Mandla Maphumulo.  He's yet to be arrested.

Meanwhile Ndelu has encouraged people, especially women in abusive relationships, not to suffer in silence.

"Woman in abuse relationships need to know that there is help but also the police are the first stop. The more we let these perpetrators walk - the more we give them power to conceal."

The Total Shutdown movement said Simelane was brave enough to record her assault.

It said she risked a lot by going live on social media.

Political party, the EFF, filed a criminal case against Maphumulo at Umlazi police station.

"Such monsters must be isolated and disowned by society. No business person should do business with Mampintsha. No promoters should book Mampintsha, and no events host should do business with him," the party's Vusi Khoza said.
