Women are seen as easy targets: Democratic Students Movement
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The SA Democratic Students Movement says the two alleged sexual assault and rape incidents at UKZN's Pietermaritzburg campus this week show that young women are still made to feel vulnerable.
During a briefing in Durban yesterday, the student body told reporters that universities are institutions where protection and safety should be afforded to women.
The allegations pushed UKZN into further chaos with police and security personnel called in to disperse angry students. The movement's Nokwethemba Nkwanyana says they're disappointed that women are still seen as easy targets.
Police said yesterday that no rape by a police officer has been reported in Pietermaritzburg.
Officers say a case of sexual assault, which allegedly occurred while students were being pushed back by police, has been reported and is receiving attention.
Protests turned violent on Monday over fee increased, complaints concerning police and security soon surfaced.
