The incident comes a few days after a giraffe trampled a mother and her 16-month-old daughter at a Hluhluwe game farm in the same province, killing the child and leaving the mother critically injured.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst says the woman, her daughter, and her daughter's boyfriend had been swimming in the pool.

The left the pool when load shedding hit.

"On their way to their accommodation, they encountered a hippo and its baby.  They tried to escape by running away from the hippo but the 50-year-old was caught and was bitten and trampled by the hippo. She was treated at the scene and airlifted to hospital.

"The daughter and her boyfriend had managed to escaped injury."

St Lucia police will investigate the incident.
