It's believed 18 cars were stolen in the vicinity of Ferguson and Bulwer Roads in the last week of April alone.

A woman who spoke to Newswatch says she too was almost a victim.

She says she and her daughter returned to her car that had been parked outside a coffee shop on Ferguson Road, only to find a man crouching outside the vehicle by the driver's door.

She believes the man had been inside her car but was interrupted by a florist who had been delivering flowers.

"Everything was ready. The dash was stripped - it was ready for hot wiring. When he saw us he just hopped into the idling sedan that was waiting in front of my car and drove off calmly. The call I got from the Umbilo Police Station on the 2nd of May from a sergeant - he said to me between the Monday and a Friday there were 18 cars that were taken," she said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane's confirmed the incident saying that no arrests had been made at this stage.

The woman and her daughter managed to get the getaway car's registration number but this turned out to be unlisted when police ran a check.
