Woman in labour stuck in Osindisweni protest
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Law enforcement had to be called in to assist in getting a 28-year-old woman, who was in labour, safely to hospital after protests broke out in Osindiswni, north of Durban, on Monday.
Reaction Unit's Prem Balram says the woman, who is around eight months pregnant, was being rushed to hospital in private transport after experiencing severe contractions.
Balram says as they approached the hospital, they found themselves stuck amongst others around a kilometre out, after the road was blocked by protestors angered over water shortages.
"A kilometre from the hospital, protestors blocked up the road with light poles, log and started a fire."

"The police that were in attendance then called Reaction Unit and asked for assistance with the helicopter to airlift the female. When we got to the scene, we realised that the female was eight months pregnant.
"We could not put her into a helicopter because of the vibrations. They had to transport the female via the RUSA ambulance to hospital.
"We managed to talk to the protestors, cleared the road for us and then we transported her to hospital."
