Woman drowns in Umgeni river
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
A woman has drowned in the Umgeni river near the Umgeni River Bird Park in Durban North.
The incident took place at around mid-day yesterday. Emergency personnel from both Marshall Security and Crisis Medical were at the scene. Spokesperson for both companies, Kyle Van Reenen says her death follows an encounter with authorities.
"Reports from the scene suggest that while police were conducting a routine patrol in the area they stopped to interview 2 females", he said.
"One of the women got a fright and decided to flee on foot, reportedly running down into the bushes and into the Umgeni river", Van Reenen said.
"Unfortunately drowned and paramedics found her floating face-down in the river. She was declared 'dead' by paramedics and handed over to the police for investigations", he said.
