Wits students describes chaos on campus

A student at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) hid from fellow students, who are protesting for free higher education.

The BSc Chemistry student went to campus after management announced that classes would resume.


Protesting students have warned that they will shut down Wits campuses, despite management's determination to resume academic activities.


Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse students wanting to disrupt classes.

Meanwhile, there are running battles on the Wits University campus between students and police.


Earlier three female strikers stripped from their tops calling on police to stop firing at them.


"Cease fire, stop shooting us. We are not going back to class - why are you shooting us," they yelled while holding their hands up to show they were not armed.

It's understood students earlier wanted to enter the Great Hall to hold a meeting but they were refused entry.
