Window close approaching for COVID TERS applications
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The clock is ticking for struggling businesses and sectors as they have till mid-March to take advantage of the COVID Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme which now has been further extended.
This after Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi signed the updated COVID TERS direction - paving the way for the UIF to process claims.
The claims process takes place in two iterations - the first being from 16th of October to the 31st of December 2020, and the second from the 1st of January to the 15th of March 2021.
The UIF's Makhosonke Buthelezi says despite most of the economy being active again some sectors are still struggling hence the decision to extend the scheme.
"We anticipating applications from the tourism sector, liquor industry", he said.
"We are also looking at business which have just become operational like the liquor industry where workers have just gone back full time. So those people still may have to come forward and claim". Buthelezi said.
