Wide-scale job losses threaten poultry industry

The managing director of food producer, RCL Foods, says he fears that the South African poultry industry will be wiped out - if government does not stop the dumping of chicken from the European Union.
Scott Pitman was speaking at a march by the Food and Allied Workers Union in Pietermaritzburg, earlier today.
They marched to the KZN Legislature against job losses in the poultry industry - due to EU dumping.

Pitman, whose company RCL Foods owns Rainbow Chicken, says 130 000 people stand to lose their jobs.
"It would just be a few smaller players supplying people like Woolworths and the fresh market. But the bulk of it will be wiped out - which involves 130 000 people employed by the chicken industry and its associates. And that I'm afraid is inevitable unless we impede a dumping of leg quarters on our country," he said.
