Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
As the country marks Freedom Day today, informal settlement dwellers say they're still left to suffer 27 years into democracy.
Shack dwellers' movement, Abahlali Basemjondolo's Thapelo Mohapi, says people living in shacks are still being denied their basic human rights.
"We are still living under difficult conditions that we have been living, post this so-called Freedom, so we cannot really say we are free when are dying and burning in fires.

"We can not say we are free when we are living under inhumane conditions besides the pandemic, we are also suffering from other diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and more."
Ndumiso Hlophe of Blackburn Informal Settlement in Durban says Freedom Day holds no significance to him.
"We're far from getting the freedom we deserve because we haven't seen any changes in our lives. We don't have proper sanitation or ablution facilities. I don't see any reason to celebrate this day."
