Welbedacht fire claims lives of young mom, toddler
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A young mother and her toddler daughter have been killed in a fire at their home in Welbedacht in the south of Durban.

The blaze is believed to have started at around 3am on Tuesday morning.
eThekwini Fire Division Commander for the area is Dennis Govender.
"We found the shack was totally gutted. We extinguished the fire. Simultaneously we tried to do a search and rescue and we found a young 19-year-old mother and her two-year-old baby fatally wounded from this fire.
"We suspect the cause to be illegal connection and also we noticed there was load shedding so obviously the mom would have used a candle to get some source of light and I think when the load shedding came back maybe that candle continued to burn."
