Weed out drug kingpins: Wentworth CPF

The Wentworth Community Policing Forum says although it welcomes the arrest of a metro police officer for being in possession of drugs, the South African Police Service is not doing enough to get to the drug lords in the area.

The 29-year-old officer was arrested at his Wentworth flat on Thursday, in a joint operation between the Hawks and the eThekwini Metro Police. He was found packing cocaine into plastic bags.

Chairman of the CPF Donovan Anderson says the drug problem there has led to an increase in house break- ins and theft out of people's yards and cars...

"The public has been giving information to the cops. If [the KZN SAPS] could put a specialised unit into Wentworth and start tracking and weeding out the top guys. They are not doing enough in terms of actually going for the [big fish]. The community is feeling let down," he said.

Yesterday, the police's Major Thulani Zwane said the street value of the drugs recovered was an estimated R35 000.

The officer appeared in the Wentworth Magistratrates' Court yesterday.
