We will meet ConCourt's Nkandla deadline: Treasury
The National Treasury says it will meet the Constitutional Court’s deadline to determine how much President Jacob Zuma must pay for the non-security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.
"The National Treasury's work to give effect to the Constitutional Court order regarding the presidential homestead in Nkandla is progressing well and the department will be able to meet the deadline," it said in a statement yesterday.
The deadline is June 28.
On March 31, the court found that Zuma and Parliament had acted inconsistently with the Constitution by ignoring Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's recommendations in her Secure In Comfort report. She found Zuma had unduly benefited from the R246m spent on so-called security upgrades to his home in Nkandla.
She recommended that he repay a reasonable portion of the money spent on features unrelated to security: the swimming pool, amphitheatre, visitors’ centre, cattle kraal and chicken run.
In a unanimous judgment, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng ordered the Treasury to determine this amount and get back to the court within 60 days. The court ordered that Zuma make his payment 45 days thereafter.
The Treasury said it had already concluded several steps and assessments and would submit its final report in due course.
"A detailed account of the work that has been undertaken, including the methodology followed, will be made public at an appropriate time," it said.
