'We don't have money to burn diesel anymore', warns Eskom's Jan Oberholzer
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Eskom says it can no longer afford to buy diesel at the rate it's been purchasing the fuel.
The power utility's executives on Tuesday afternoon gave an update on the state of the country's electricity system.
They say Eskom has burned through R12 billion in the first six months of this year, an amount which was almost its entire annual budget.

COO Jan Oberholzer says the cash shortage is further compounded by owing customers.
"We do not have money to burn diesel anymore. You find municipalities saying owing you R52 billion, but on the other side you are forced to burn diesel while people are owing you money and moving forward, we will be forced as Eskom to implement load shedding because we do not have the money to burn diesel at the rate we have been doing up until now."
